Mogorjelo – Roman Villa Rustica
Mogorjelo is situated in the immediate vicinity of town Čapljina. There once stood a Roman Villa Rustica. This edifice is one of the most beautiful structures of the late classical architecture in Herzegovina. The objects found at Mogorjelo date from the 4th century.
The edifice was unearthed between 1899. and 1903. and conserved during the subsequent years. In 1893. the public was informed for the first time about the existence of some ruins on this spot which through centuries has been used as a cemetery.
The Villa Rustica itself with its rich ornaments, charm and unique architecture represents an unimaginable oasis of historical value and beauty, surrounded by a luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation.
